Severn Valley Westerns to receive Indian engines
The Western Locomotive Association, owners of D1013 “Western Ranger” and D1062 “Western Courier”, has purchased two MTU 538 V12 engines from India, the engines being a modern successor to the Maybach MD655.
The 538 is a marine version of the MD655 and are expected to last a lot longer. The WLA will make use of the engines from the heads of the block down, in effect converting the engine to an MD655 specification, with replacement cams boxes, intercoolers and turbo charger. The engines are expected to arrive at Kidderminster depot in January.
