Welsh Highland Railway suffers devastating landslide

The Welsh Highland Railway has suffered a devastating landslide near Tryfan Junction, due to heavy rainfall. The incident was discovered during a line inspection on 19 December and is thought to have occurred the previous day following a period of intense localised rainstorms. Approximately 100 cubic metres of mud is covering the line, resulting in Santa specials having to operate over a shorter length of the line.

Director and General Manager Paul Lewin said the area is known for its land movements, due to its proximity to a river, but that previous reinforcement work had helped mitigate damage.

A decision on services between Christmas and new year will be made on 23 December, following a full geotechnical assessment.
