Anxious times for GCR on eve of ‘Pay what you can afford’ Christmas Day service
Great Central Railway General Manager Malcolm Holmes says he is “a little bit anxious that we may have too many people coming” to the railway’s ‘Pay what you can afford’ Christmas Day service, following the “phenomenal” response online. Holmes said that the idea to run a public service, in addition to the usual first class dining train, was the idea of a couple of volunteers and it is the first time the railway has run such a service. The General Manager continued by saying that the trains “will allow people who haven’t got anywhere else to go at Christmas, or might not be able to to afford to go anywhere else at Christmas, to enjoy a day at the Great Central Railway surrounded by friendly people”.
Holmes went on to say that the Santa Express trains have performed really well this year, but not as well as last year.
